Let's be honest: Reading through the Old Testament can get really confusing really fast.

The books of the Old Testament are not in chronological order. Some of the books cover broad periods of history, while others cover only a few months. Some of books are historic, some are prophetic, and some are even poetic.

The books of the Old Testament are sorted by genre, not historical chronology. This means that some books in the middle of the Old Testament, such as the book of Esther, are actually the last books to be written in the Old Testament.

How can you help your kids better understand what is going on in the Old Testament?

The answer is simple - an Old Testament timeline that will help your kids understand what historical periods the different books of the Bible cover and give your kids a visual overview of what is happening historically.

This Old Testament Timeline is a simple tool to help you and your kids see where different books of the Old Testament fall on the timeline of history based on the information that they cover or when they were written. Using this timeline, your kids will be able to quickly understand that

  • Genesis covers a longer time span than all of the other books of the Old Testament combined
  • Daniel and Ezekiel were contemporaries
  • Ezra and Nehemiah were contemporaries
  • 1 & 2 Chronicles covers the same historical time period as 1 & 2 Samuel, but then includes another 400 years of history after 2 Samuel
  • Jeremiah prophesied during the time when Babylon was conquering Judah
  • the story of Esther occurred about 60 years after the first Jews had returned to Jerusalem from Persia
  • and that Esther, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Malachi were the last books of the Old Testament to be written.

This timeline is shown on two pieces of 8.5 by 11 inch paper - making it perfect for a classroom bulletin board OR to hand out to students so they can each have their own copy. It is also perfect for a home reference for homeschooling or for family Bible study.

Old Testament Timeline

The Old Testament Timeline is well laid out and visually appealing for children. It highlights major events and people while showing where the different Old Testament Bible Books fit in based on content. Emphasizing specific dates as to when each book was written was not the intent of this timeline. It prints out on only two sheets of paper in landscape mode. This makes it very cost-effective to even provide each child their own copy if you teach a class like Sunday School.
